This is a series I have wanted to make for a while. It is still a work in progress;) The first one is “Wolf Robe” from the Cheyenne tribe. I call this piece “Wrinkled with Wisdom” The 2nd piece was inspired by a photograph taken by the late Edward Curtis. “Eagle Catcher” The original photo is amazing! I loved it so much I decided to recreate my own version:)
A couple new styles of animal art. I have always loved drawing animals and Im really loving this style!
Gouache is a medium that Im still fairly new to, but I instantly enjoyed its versatility! I love how thick you can paint with gouache or water it down to a watercolor. One thing I have noticed is that it lacks water resistance after it drys.
This was a piece I created for the Index climbing guidebook. Index is an eccentric little town, with a magestic backdrop and some amazing world class climbing. I wanted to make a quirky piece that captured the Index, funky vibes. I thought a comic book style/ sic fi piece would do just that. A different artist colored the piece and I love how it turned out! He is amazing! Check out gnartoons.com if you would like to see some more of James’ work.
The last piece was a local beer label assignment. I wanted to do something different then the usual apples and basic logos. I was inspired by all the forest fires we have here in central Washington! Also, my brother had asked me to do a piece like this years ago and the time had finally arrived to pull it out of the creative piggy bank.
The first piece I have here is one I made for my good friend after a climbing expedition to Alaska. They had just put up a new route called the Reality face and ‘Alpinist’ magazine was sharing their story. I think the art piece went well with their adventure! The 2nd picture is a water color/color pencil piece I made of the beautiful Prusik Peak in the Enchantments.
The Sleeping Lady is a formation at the mouth of Icicle canyon. As you can see from the picture, it actually looks like a sleeping lady! I was inspired to do a whimsical, winter fairytale image of the hillside.
This series was inspired by the desire to add more local art flare to the central cascades. As some of you may know, Leavenworth Washington is a little bavarian tourist town and there is no shortage of bavarianesque souvenirs! Leavenworth is also know for its incredible scenery and endless opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. My idea was to capture a different perspective of the central Washington Mountain range. Something that was full of light and joy. These painting are pale in comparison to the real beauty of the cascades! However, they do offer an entirely different perspective then that of what we normally see. Instead, perhaps, what some of us may feel. I also sell cards and prints of this series at Leavenworth Mountain Sports.
The first logo is a commissioned piece I did for a super awesome dog food company! They had a new product coming up and needed an illustration of a wolf/dog. The PNW logo I made for fun and ended making t - shirts out if for a fundraiser. The Baby Joker is a logo I made in school and the last 2 logos were for clients.
Maps are so much fun to make! The level of detail and accuracy becomes overwhelmingly awesome. This was an over view map I made for the Index WA climbing guidebook. I think it turned out pretty neat! I have some more maps I will be adding soon:)
These are all school projects that I really enjoyed. I have some more commissioned work I would like to add, but this is a good start! The first one is an 8 page pamphlet about an endangered species. This is just the front and back. The 2nd set of photos is from a branding project I made for a Chocolate shop. The last pictures I included are of a fake cider company. Cider is delicious! Anybody need a lable?;)
I don’t typically work with pencil only, but this project turned out quite nice. I really like the shading possibilities of pencil. Ink is so much more committing, but pencil you can erase and re-do as much as you like!
Posters are one of my most favorite forms of graphic design. These are some of my favorites I have done. All of them have been for clients except for the Star Wars poster. This was a project in school where we could only use text as a solution. I am a picture person, so this concept is rather difficult for me. However, I really like how it turned out and captures the era of the original Star Wars.
Digital art is kind of a generic term to me. Some of these pieces I started on paper and then moved into an Adobe program. Others I used photo collaging techniques in Photoshop and some are computer illustrations generated in Illustrator. None the less, Computer based programs were used in all of these! Digital art is pretty fascinating stuff. The possibilities in this realm are limitless and all consuming.
Murals are so much fun and a TON of work. The first one I posted is a mural I made for some good friends of mine. The 2nd one is an anamorphic logo mural I helped with for the Riverfront Rock Gym in Wenatchee WA. Marlin Peterson was the master mind behind this one. He is also a kick ass muralist and artist. Check out his website if you would like to see more of his work. http://marlinpeterson.com/
Book illustrations have seemed to be a popular thread in my art jobs this last year. Here is one cover I designed (and incase your wondering, the book is really good too;)) I have 2 more book projects in the making and I will be uploading them soon!
T-shirts are a fun side project I like to work on. I have a few more to upload!
